Salvage of a regulation deck barge at Brown Marine, Pensacola, Florida. The barge
had been used for many years as a mooring barge. It had extensive damage to
of its tanks and was rendered un floatable. I assisted the salvage efforts
by pulling it up onto the beach with a 1,000,000 LB Bollard pull twin Block
and Tackle powered by a 100,000 lb line pull Double Drum Winch.
Fully automating a triple engine single screw 3000 KW diesel electric tug
built in 1939. The automation was so comprehensive I could single handedly
control the vessel. This was accomplished with a Modicon
984 PLC, Simrad Kongsberg instruments &
autopilot, Murphy Engine Instruments, and various electric valves. The Vessel
was operated by remote control if required. The control was of my own design
and fully interfaced to all ships functions with the exception of the coffee
pot in the galley.
Re manufacturing a Manitowoc
3600W in situ at Steiner Shipyards, Inc. Bayou La Batre,
AL.
This crane had to be repaired where it stopped crawling, the work area
underneath was sunken 3 feet into the sand. The crane had a broken stump
which had caused the large bevel pinion to climb the teeth on the bevel gear
breaking the main caps on the horizontal travel shaft. New main caps were
installed as well as line boring of both the horizontal shaft way and the
stump, which had to be rebuilt and machined to fit on site. The turntable and
swing ring also had to be re machined on site as well.
Conversion of a 20'x 80' planer for Southeastern Frog and Switch, Inc.
Bessemer, AL. The planer was built in the 1940's and the ways and controls
were worn out with no supply for replacement parts. I had to convert it to
modern ball screw drive and nylon ways, more challenging though was the
control of the massive table. I had to retrofit the existing DC controls to
AC powered CNC controls by Allen Bradley. The weight of the Table was 55 tons
creating a very difficult drive situation which I corrected with a linear
encoder providing a real time position, direction, and speed feedback loop to
an acceleration/deceleration routine in the ladder. This coupled with
deceleration a regenerative drive package I designed and ordered built by
Southern Power in Pelham, AL resulted in better production times and accuracy
from this old cast iron monster than would be expected by a three to five
axis CNC mill of the same size (the current industry standard).
